[COMPLETE] 34th Weekend Contest: 10/19 - 10/22 (Seed 511962)

Postby boa13 » October 19th, 2012, 4:39 pm

This contest is now over.

Hey everyone, welcome to this weekend's contest! This is our 34th Brogue contest, and the first contest for the brand-new Brogue version 1.7! :)

The seed for this contest, created from stock market indices and a bit of hocus-pocus, is 511962.

How to compete:

1. The contest begins right now, on Friday October 19th, 2012 at 22:00 UTC (6:00 PM EDT). You can start your game any time after this. The contest is open to anyone.

2. Start a game by control-clicking "New Game" in Brogue v1.7 and entering the seed. Verify that the screenshot below matches what you see on your screen.

3. Play through the game. You only get one chance. We are all on the honor system here.

4. Once you are finished, record your score and post the details of your game in this thread. Minimum requirements for consideration include your score, cause of death and lowest level reached. However, the thread is open to all spoilers, so feel free to add screenshots, game recordings, character dumps, strategy tips, etc. You do not need to wait for the end of the contest.

5. The contest will run for 72 hours (three whole days) and ends on Monday October 22nd, 2012 at 22:00 UTC (6:00 PM EDT). You must finish your game and post your results by that time to be considered in the contest.

6. As a result of point 4,

PLEASE DO NOT READ THE REST OF THE POSTS IN THIS THREAD UNTIL YOUR RUN IS FINISHED.

As always, honor system.

7. Good luck! Have fun, etc.

Results

15 players competed in this week-end contest, the first with Brogue 1.7. The winner is fugori, who managed to grab the amulet, and was far ahead of every other competitor. Congratulations!

Brogue 1.7 brings many changes, notably with the disappearance of experience and levels, the reinforcement of stealth mechanisms, and the new kind of items: charms. With vault frequency going back to pre-1.6.4 levels, and monster stats tweaked to balance all the aforementioned changes, it is quite possible the game difficulty has increased.

In this round, most players died around depth 10 to 15. fugori reached depth 26 and the amulet, thedrin, second in score, only reached depth 16. Many players made use of the spear of slowing found early in the game, and of the axe of speed found several depths below. The teleportation charm that could be found on depth 1 saved players many times, but the late arrival of strong armor and the increase in toughness of the middle levels put a stop to most runs.

Here is the list of contestants, ordered by score:

10720: Killed by a wraith on level 16.

Axe of speed, unknown enchantment level
+1 spear of slowing
+10 protected scale mail of reprisal (7 enchantments)
+1 ring of light
+1 ring of regeneration
+1 charm of teleportation
[3/3] staff of discord

This seed is challenging, but fun. What you choose from the vaults on level 2 may well define how the game plays out. I went for the +1 ring of light and the +1 spear of slowing. Traps didn't hinder me very much but going for a ring of awareness would have made it easier to pick off some of the tougher opponents using traps. The spear turned out to be a great choice since my strength didn't increase past 14 until level 14.

I got into serious trouble around level 12 and 13 and loaded all of my enchants into the scale mail. The plate mail I was carrying around would have been a better option, but I was in combat with a tough opponent I couldn't run away from and was just 1 hit from death. The series of allies beginning on depth 13 allowed me to continue further but once I lost them all - 3 dar blademasters, 1 naga, 1 troll - I didn't survive for long.

I never figured out how to get into the scroll vault on level 9.

8919 Killed by an ogre on level 15.

Argh! I had so many narrow escapes, it was ridiculous. At first the big problem was ogres - +4 plate and weak weapon was not good enough to melee them reliably and I had to run many times. Finally after I got the plate up to +5 and the axe up to +2, ogres were not such a threat anymore. But by this time trolls are arriving in large numbers...

In the end a blasted spider was partly responsible for my demise, stuck in his web, poisoned, vulnerable to an approaching ogre. I didn't really expect to die there and could have escaped again with teleport charm. But the ogre hit really hard and I wasn't watching carefully enough, game over. Bah.

None of my allies survived long enough to learn a new skill. :( From the first vaults I chose ring of awareness (+3) and spear of slowing. But as soon as I found the axe of speed, I went back and traded the spear for wand of negation. This saved me several times. Later I found a +1 ring of regeneration. No other gear besides the staff of discord found early on. I used remote activation of traps quite often to deal with difficult enemies. Ran out of darts and carried around a lot of useless weapons and armor to throw on the switches.

25527 Killed by a Lich on level 24, amulet in hand.

I was home free....... I don't want to talk about how this happened.

I bet we'll see some lumenstone victories on this one.

Edit (Final Kit):

+6 axe of speed (protected) [4 enchantments]
+7 plate armor (protected) [7 enchantments]
+3 ring of awareness (worn)
+2 ring of regeneration (worn) [1 enchantment]
+2 ring of wisdom
+2 scale mail (unknown runic)
staff of discord 3/3
wand of negation (used 7 times, enchanted once or twice, recharged two or three times, still had charges left)
wand of polymorphism (used 4 times, recharged two or three times, still had at least one charge)
+1 teleportation charm (8%)
+2 levitation charm (ready)
+1 invisibility charm (14%)

Went for negation and awareness. Negation absolutely paid off, over and over again, and enchantments go a long way toward making it last.

I never can tell how awareness does, but in my few plays in 1.7 so far I've had more hunger issues than usual, and I had food issues early in this seed, so it at the very least helped me conserve food. I think it helped me keep my allies alive for a while, too, and they took me through the mid game (a naga, a dar priestess, and a pixie).

Also, I dipped down to 27 to check for lumenstones but it was wayyyyyy too hairy. Not that it matters since I couldn't even get the amulet out.

Just checked the recording - the runic on this was dragon immunity, haha. Wouldn't have made a difference for me, at least, but interesting nonetheless. It's in a runic vault all by itself in depth 21.

Died with score and circumstances not worth mentioning - I was playing carelessly since I knew deep down that I should either be sleeping or doing homework.

I enchanted the spear of slowing to +3 which is where I probably would have left it. I never quite identified the axe of speed - that would have been a fun combo.

Now that enchantment level has an exponential effect on accuracy, you can really feel the reliability of an enchanted weapon, and the clumsiness of a weapon you're too weak for. I like it.

The paralysis trap + rat swarm on depth 2 caught me way off guard. Fun stuff! The vault on depth 9 is also very clever - I figured out eventually through process of elimination what the unidentified scroll on that level had to be.

I can't seem to break my genocidal play habits. Now that I don't even get 1 XP for my trouble I'm going to have to learn to let sleeping rats lie.

Killed by a Troll on depth 13 with 7055.

Kept waiting for a vault that never came. This was my first run on 1.7, and I need to make some changes to basic strategy.

Long time no play, so I have died on depth 6, with unworthy score. I had this weird thing happen to me though:
Image
As you can see ogre is quite weakened, moreover another ogre that was not weakened needed ~4 hits to kill me with similar health (well maybe full, but still here I have about 70%), and by features of new version there should be less variance in damage. So how come the ability to 1 hit kill? Though I had to fight it in meele and I have defeated it, so I think its only in monster description, but I may be wrong and may have been lucky.

EDIT: well it seems image does not fit in full here, but you can take image address and view it on imgur using url.

6147, Died to a fall on level 14.

Had a huge amount of trouble where everyone else was - I couldn't make it past the inflection point where the plate mail finally became reliable against ogres and above. Went for spear of slowing and ring of transferrence - I was excited to turn this into an axe of speed + transferrence run.

I wasn't quite sure what to do with potions of life - they granted a lot more life than I was expecting, to the point where you're at double once you've used three. I figured that using at least a few potions of life was mandatory by the endgame, so I didn't try very hard to preserve mine. That may have been a mistake, as I could've used every escape option I could find. It felt like I went through the entirety of D:7-D13 with Weakened: -2. I couldn't afford to sleep it off because of potential food issues.

I blew a couple of enchantments early on that could've helped me get past the midgame hump - one on discord, when I risked use-iding enchantment and did, and one on the spear of slowing before finding the axe of speed, in part to get through a tough melee encounter while weakened. The spear one I definitely could have saved.

My eventual end came after wandering 12 and 13 for a while while weakened and low on health. I had a chance to rest it all off that I should've taken, but I was out of rations (but with a full nutrition bar), but didn't want to risk starvation. I decided to engage an acid jelly with discord before it cornered me, but found the severely wounded remainder to be too difficult to kill with fists, and had to teleport. I landed in the same room as a wraith, and that was basically it. I had an option to take a pit with relatively low health. It was that or certain death to the wraith.

Overall, I'm satisfied with the new difficulty of the game. 1.6.4 was just way too easy and nearly guaranteed everything you'd need for an ascension within the first few levels.

3967, killed by an ogre on level 8

had been down to level 9 and cleared it, but kept running into centipedes and dropping to 4 strength...

the rats/paralysis nearly made me jump out of my skin!!

had the axe of speed, had chosen discord staff and wand of negation from the early vaults - hadn't even used negation by level 9, but had great fun discording the jellies and letting them kill each other (my other games with 1.7 are all jelly deaths in levels 5-6).

I have ascended a few times with 1.6.4 and 1.6.2 - but this game needs a new strategy - its going to be a fun
while until I get it :).

Love the charms!! teleportation charm to the rescue a few times!

1499: Killed by an acid mound on level 6.

Mental note: stop playing upon coming home tired and half-pissed from the pub

This was a promising seed, I think I'll play it again for an unofficial attempt.

Yeah, hard to tell right now. So far in 1.7 I've been consistently surviving to the end-game, but I have yet to feel confident by then and usually die between depth 20 and depth 25. The early-game seems easier until depth 7 or 8. At that point it gets pretty brutal BUT there are more ways to escape with new charms, it seems.

I know some people thought the vault frequency was too high in 1.6.4, but TBH it seems like there are extra items scattered around outside of vaults now, meaning I get more stuff in total, and I more frequently have a large surplus of weapons and armor to identify now.

Pincushion! Killed by a centaur on level 14 while paralyzed, with 5461 points. It wasn't going to end well, though, anyway; a typo earlier forced me to commit enchants to the vanilla plate, which isn't what I would've been doing.

Killed by a troll on depth 13, score 5359.

Like many others, I had first chosen the +1 spear of slowing, and then the axe of speed, which I put to +3. I was still using the +2 chain mail when I died, though I now see that I was also carrying an unidentified +3 scale mail of reprisal with the same armor value. I had chosen the +2 ring of transference from the early vaults, thinking the removal of health potions might make transference a more interesting ring, especially in combo with the spear. I was quite glad of my choice when I found the axe. Apart from that, I was using the +1 teleportation charm from level 1, which saved me a few times. The staff of discord was also put to good use.

A first team of allies died in a horrible potion of incineration accident around level 8, and I died on level 13 after successfully freeing the naga from the salamander... A fight which left me in a very bad shape, at which point a troll wandered around the corner... :(

1174, killed by a vampire bat on depth 6. Just wasn't paying attention, really. I could have escaped, but stupidly decided to gamble on a potion that I thought would save me, and it didn't.

Wow there were a lot of teleportation charms this game. (For the other vault item, I took the ring of transference.) Hadn't enchanted anything when I died; I probably would have put my enchants into the (non-cursed) plate mail.

If anyone's curious, I updated the weekly contest page on the wiki with results from the last 23 contests (it hadn't been updated in a while).

What I learned from this process:

Cybermg has been dominant, with 9 total wins, and at one point winning 5 contests in a row and 7 out of 8 during that stretch!
mikeym is second on the all-time list, with 6 total wins.
Creaphis is third with 4 total wins.

This is the first contest I've been able to participate in wanted to have a strong showing. HA! Ogre-geddon did me in around D10. I dropped 5 enchants into the plate mail and it was not enough. Died before I ID'd the axe of speed.
