Brogue 1.7.2 Tiles Version

Postby Oryx » February 27th, 2013, 2:38 am

Updated for 1.7.2
Now featuring 2 window sizes for those with small monitors.
The small window size font may have some readability or pixel issues which will be improved in future versions.

Thanks Joshua Day for the code side updates.

While I love the presentation you may want to double-check the spelling of edition.

Look forward to downloading and giving this a go.

Edit: And it is awesome. Just needs 8 bit sound track/effects to go with it (and perhaps a little inter-tile tweening when moving, but that'll be beyond the engine if I'm not mistaken). Cardinal Quest has spoiled me :)

The only thing I've noticed so far is that bloats look a bit too much like a dungeon feature instead of a monster. Not sure how you could address this - the spite is just a touch too symetrical though for it to be immediately apparent that it is out to kill you. Speeding up the animation on this tile would also help but I'm not sure whether it is possible.

Love it! The small size makes it actually playable on my laptop! At first I thought that scrolls were toads but I've overcome that little hurdle and so far everything is quite nice. I still think I ultimately prefer ascii, but I love how this tileset takes advantage of Brogue's own colors and effects.

I hope you don't mind, but I shared a link to this post on r/roguelikes.

I also posted a direct link to your site as a comment.

Hah thanks for pointing out Editon, I did that in a rush last night :) and thanks for the compliments. The shrunk version is still a bit icky to me because of reduction but I'll do my best to clean it up. I'll look into the bloats, and also please feel free to give any other feedback on particular sprites.

As for music, if Jday could hook it up I could easily get a nice looping background dungeon theme.

Let me know any other sprites that look particularly bad or hard to read (in the small version) and I'll try to improve them.

Oh, this clearly works on a normal resolution screen.

I guess I have a thread to make on SA then.

I'm OK with the bloat sprite, but the animated version of the small one is pretty subtle. It's hard to tell that it's animating at all.

Neither size really fits my monitor all that well (I'll have to upgrade it one of these years) but I love the style. One question: can you disable animation on sleeping monsters?

Question from a redditor:

"Should I bother trying to get this to work with a 1280x800 screen. Also, any love for the OSX version yet?"

When I get home I will experiment with 8-bit music that could fit Brogue. (It will probably be inspired by Dungeons of Dredmor's soundtrack's pacing, if anything.)

Yes, the smaller size window is below that resolution. Although of course I'm not as fond of it because it's all squishy.
As for OSX I don't know who maintains the OSX build but I'd be glad to support it with GFX if they implement the code changes.

This smaller size is perfect on my 4x3 monitor at 1280x1024. Text isn't squished at all, in fact it's almost exactly like normal brogue font at the same size. Fabulous job!

Can't wait for 8-bit sound.

But the tiles are. When you have the chance, try it in its full-size glory!
